MIL-DTL-52849E
functional failure of the kit components, inability to perform the tests or satisfy test precision
criteria shall constitute failure of this test.
4.5.4 Transportability.
4.5.4.1 Vibration. The test kit packaged in its carrying case shall endure 40 minutes of
vibration in each of 3 axes. The test bed shall produce a 1 inch (2.54 cm), double amplitude,
orbital path, at 5 Hz. Damage or breakage of the case or any component of the kit, shall
constitute failure of this test.
4.5.4.2 Shock. Each case and its components shall withstand a drop test performed on
an 8 in. (20 cm) thick bed of dry sand from a height of 48 in. (122 cm). Drop tests shall be
conducted at -25 ± 5 °F (-32 ± 2 °C) and at 140 ± 5 °F and at 60 ± 2 °C). Cases and components
shall be subjected to one cornerwise drop on each of diagonally opposite corners. Each shall
then be subjected to one flat drop on the bottom, the top, and two adjacent sides, then one
edgewise drop on each edge of the case. For edgewise drops, the striking edge shall be parallel
with the dropping surface at the instant of release. For edgewise and cornerwise drops, the case
center of gravity shall be directly above the striking edge or corner of case at instant of release.
All drops shall be made so that the test kit falls freely through the distance of 48 inches (122
cm). Upon completion of this test, each sample kit shall be examined for damage to the case and
each component and accessory. Any evidence of permanent deformation, cracks, or damaged
items shall constitute failure of this test.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as
specified in the contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of materiel is to be
performed by DoD personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity
to ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the Inventory
Control Point's packaging activity within the Military Department or Defense Agency, or within
the military service's system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the
managing Military Department's or Defense Agency's automated packaging files, CD-ROM
products, or by contacting the responsible packaging activity.
6. NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful, but is
not mandatory.)
